Break Up the Big Banks?

The community banks that have served our region and state so well for many years have seen increased costs because of regulatory changes made in the aftermath of the major national investment banking scandals. Now, the former chairman of Citigroup, one of the biggest, thinks Wall Street should break up its big banks to regain the public trust.

Clearly some combination of big bank breakup and/or restoration of a version of the Glass-Steagall act is called for. Even staunch proponents of financial self regulation, such as Alan Greenspan and Sandy Weil,l are now in favor of such reforms.
