Connecticut's Armada

On Thursday, Chamber President Tony Sheridan left for Europe with the Connecticut Armada, a group of more than a dozen companies from across the state led by U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney. The mission? To get a handle on international trade and bring some of the benefits home to businesses in Connecticut.

The companies, mostly small and mid-sized firms, will meet with overseas officials to discuss exporting in meetings set up by the U.S. Embassy.

Tony will also meet with tour operators in Ireland, Belgium and the U.K. in hopes of promoting tourism in eastern Connecticut.

Connecticut’s Armada is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s regional export-assistance center in Middletown, headed by Ann Evans.

What do you think? Will international trade give our region a boost?

International outreach is absolutely critical for Southern NE. This is a great initiative. We need to be coordinated and collaborative in our approach. The international market -- Europe, Asia, S. America, etc. -- can have huge impact on tourism, for one. We will have to be reasourceful and creative in our approach as the State's "investment" priorities remain unclear.

This effort is a great way to utilize the services of the Dept of Commerce and to add to the international efforts the Eastern Tourism District's sales person, Janice Putnam, was part of representing the State of Connecticut in Ireland and London and the International POW WOW recently.
