Pfizer's positive future

The news of Pfizer’s departure from their New London campus startled us all this week, but as more facts unfolded we were able to focus on the positives.

Pfizer will, in fact, remain in Connecticut, transferring their workers across the river to their Groton facility. Their workers will continue to advance our local economy. In addition, Pfizer’s ongoing support of the region through its philanthropic and volunteer efforts will add immeasurably to the quality of life in eastern Connecticut. From that standpoint, the news is not all bad. In fact, compared to other Pfizer communities throughout the country we in eastern Connecticut are very fortunate. The Groton facility will be the largest research and development center in the Pfizer portfolio.

Although the decision is hard on New London and its tax base, the fact remains that Pfizer and its multi-million dollar building and the dramatically improved grounds it sits on will continue in the future as a major asset for New London and the region.

At the Chamber, we will continue to do our part to ensure that Pfizer remains an important economic entity in eastern Connecticut and we extend our support and best wishes to the Pfizer community for continued successes.

Yes, I am sure New London will benefit from the monstrous, upgraded vacant premises being vacated by Pfizer. And I am sure all the people who lost their homes to eminent domain for the sake of planning hotel developments for t he benefit of Pfizer visitors will be much relieved to know that their loss was for nothing. The move will be a devastation to New London's finances, and certainly this consolidation cannot happen without considerable down sizing.

I think your assessment of the news was far to hopeful given the ever rising cost of doing business in CT. Thanks to rising taxes and relentless action by our state representatives to squeeze whatever they can from business and the people of CT, I do not see why Pfizer and/or other companies would want to stay. Ct is losing its edge as result, along with the exiting of our qualified workforce and youth.
