Shore Line East to reach New London

Gov. M. Jodi Rell’s announcement that she has committed to extending commuter rail service to New London via Shore Line East by December was welcomed with open arms by the citizens of eastern Connecticut, as well as the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut. The announcement was made by Rell in late July and addresses a long-standing issue within the community for that one more stop.

The move is timely, as the city of New London is at the end of an intermodal transportation center study, geared toward creating a more efficient hub for people arriving by train, bus or ferry.

As the results of the study are compiled into a plan, Chamber President Tony Sheridan said the most important move going forward will be the prioritizing of key components.

What do you think about expanding commuter rail service to New London? Leave a comment.

Anything additional that may help New London reach it's potential is very welcome! When you stand at the top of State Street looking down toward the train station, you realize that not many small cities have what New London does. A wonderful theater in the Guarde Arts Center, high speed ferry access, high speed rail service, a wonderful waterfront park and just a short drive to 2 casinos with all they have to offer, Mystic Seaport, Mystic Aquarium, and the list goes on and on. New London downtown used to be a great place. It has the potential to be even better than it was before.

That would be great. I would love to take the train without having to first drive on I 95. Amtrack is a good option, but the number of trains is limited. With Shoreline East we could have more time flexibility.

I think expanding the commuter rail service to New London, would be wonderful. But the key is making the train fare reasonable which currently deters me from using the train and many others. The amount of traffic coming in and out of Connecticut is at a all time high, I just drove to New Jersey and it took me 4 hours to just get out of Connecticut!!!
