The Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport Invites Visitors “Behind the Canvas”

Classical painter Peter Layne Arguimbau, an artist well known for his mastery of the Flemish Technique, will be the first presenter at “Behind the Canvas,” a four-part series hosted at the Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport Saturday, January 29, from 4 – 5:30 p.m.

            The series will continue Saturdays, February 26, March 19 and April 16.

            Renowned artists will share their personal stories through lectures, slide presentations and live demonstrations. Attendees will be given a behind-the-canvas look at what inspires creativity, and will additionally learn what qualities art collectors look for in a painting.

            Featured artists and presentations are:
            January 29 –Arguimbau presents “Painting the Renaissance Experience.” Attendees will learn how Arguimbau makes his own materials – from  grinding his own pigments from powders and milling his own hard wood panels to frame his works – all while emulating the Renaissance experience.

            February 26 – Joann Ballinger presents “Capturing Moments in Time through Pastel Painting.” A leading pastel artist in the Connecticut impressionist movement known for her renditions of children, seascapes and animals, Ballinger will discuss the origins of pastel and the historical artists who were gifted in the medium. The artist will also demonstrate how to capture mood and light with her pastel painting techniques.

            March 19 – Lou Bonamarte presents “Virtuoso Watercolorist.” Longtime Maritime Gallery artist and notable watercolorist, Bonamarte will show how he uses watercolors to create vibrant paintings that are highly sought by collectors.

            April 16 – Cindy Baron presents “Capturing the Beauty in Nature.” Baron, an award-winning artist, instructor and signature member of the American Watercolor Society, will show how she utilizes both watercolor and oils to capture nature’s beauty.
