Charter Oak Grant Aids Former Homeless in Eastern CT

Norwich-Based Martin House and Thames River Community Service Receive $7,500 in Grant Funding to Support Job & Housing Placement Programs for Formerly Homeless Individuals

Groton, CT-October 18, 2011-Charter Oak Federal Credit Union recently awarded the Norwich-based Martin House and Thames River Community Service organizations with $7,500 in grant funding to support housing and employment placement programs for formerly homeless individuals.

A $5,000 grant was distributed to the Martin House, which is located on the grounds of the former Norwich Hospital campus and serves individuals suffering from homelessness, mental illness, low income and unemployment. 98% of Martin House residents have histories of mental illness, with many suffering from dual diagnosis of mental illness and substance abuse, developmental disabilities or physical disabilities.

A $2,500 grant was also provided to Thames River Valley Program, a program of Thames River Community Service, which provides transitional living opportunities to single mothers as they pursue goals for self-sufficiency, independence and empowerment. Many suffer from histories of mental illness, chemical dependency, domestic violence and poverty. Charter Oak’s grant will be used to upgrade and purchase computer equipment for the Martin House’s Employment and Career Training component, which assists 24 residents in obtaining and maintain employment through resume preparation and interviewing skill building.
