“Commitment to Community”
Dime Bank Foundation Provides Aid to Norwich Homeless
A $5,000 award from the Dime Bank Foundation will assist the Norwich Community Care Team’s Hospitality Center to continue to care for the community’s chronically homeless adults. The Center is located at the Buckingham Memorial, a building owned by the City, and acts as a safe, warm, dry place to house homeless men and women in the community. The Team offers direct services, such as much needed healthcare, evening meals, clothing, as well as case management services. “With the help of the Dime Bank Foundation, we were able to permanently house 47% of the 53 people we served at the Center last year, says Lee-Ann Gomes a Supervisor with the Care Team. She adds, “Our goal this year is to permanently house 5% more than last winter and to have 75% of the people who stay with us access medical care.”
The Norwich Community Care Team, a group of health and human service agencies, was formed in 1998 to address the housing needs of the chronically homeless adult population, especially those afflicted with substance abuse and mental health issues. The Hospitality Center is an overflow winter shelter created to provide emergency services during the most inhospitable time of the season.
