Covenant Shelter receives $4860 from Shea Perpetual Trust

New London, CT – The James P. and Mary E. Shea Perpetual Trust, Bank of America, Trustee, awarded Covenant Shelter of New London, Inc. a $4860 grant to provide on-site bus tickets and long distance transportation services to clients.

“The funding from the James P. and Mary E. Shea Perpetual Trust will enable residents at Covenant Shelter to get to jobs and job interviews, medical appointments, social service agencies, educational programs, school registration and parent teacher conferences,” stated Catherine Foley, executive director of Covenant Shelter.

Last year, Covenant Shelter distributed nearly 1,000 bus tickets to a total of 110 residents which were used to look for work and attend job interviews and fairs; meet with social service providers; attend Social Security and Veterans’ Administration appointments; access medical services; attend college and adult education programs; meet with children’s teachers and school service providers.

“This grant is all about easing the stress of homelessness, providing access to opportunities and services and instilling hope for a brighter future,” Foley continued.

The Covenant Shelter of New London was established in 1983 by St. Mary Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church and St. James Episcopal Church to meet the emergency needs of the area’s homeless.  For over twenty-six Covenant Shelter has provided clean, safe, dignified shelter and meals for up to 35 men, women and children each day.
