Mystic Seaport and Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) Sponsors 2012 Connecticut Boater’s Guide Cover Contest

Artists Invited to Submit Work by October 21 Depicting Safe Boating or Water Scenes in Connecticut

Mystic, Conn. – Mystic Seaport and Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) announce the 2012 Connecticut Boater’s Guide cover competition.   The contest seeks work from local artists depicting safe boating or water scenes in Connecticut to compete to be the cover art for DEEP’s 2012 Connecticut Boater’s Guide.

Each year the DEEP publishes a Connecticut Boater’s Guide.  The guide is a comprehensive, pocket-sized booklet containing updated laws and regulations, safety tips, coastal access points, and environmental information of interest to the boating public. Approximately 92,000 copies will be printed and distributed statewide through marinas, town halls, libraries, and boating classes.

In addition to having their work featured on the cover, the winning artist will receive printed credit in the Guide, be honored at an award reception, and be featured in a month-long public exhibition at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford beginning November 1.  A selection of other top submissions will be included in the exhibit space.

“We are pleased to partner with DEEP to help promote safe boating in Connecticut and to encourage people to share their experiences on the water through artistic expression,” said Mystic Seaport president Stephen C. White.
DEEP Deputy Commissioner Susan Frechette said, “The pristine waters of Connecticut provide outstanding recreational opportunities for boaters.  The artwork submitted for the next Boating Guide cover will illustrate the importance of safe boating and serve as a reminder that all boaters should wear their life jackets to make their boating experiences safe and memorable.”

Artwork must be a representation of a Connecticut boating or water scene. For a detailed prospectus of the contest rules and acceptable artwork, please visit the DEEP website here.

Submitted work will be collected only on Friday, October 21 in the Visitors Reception Center at Mystic Seaport from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Alternative arrangements for drop off can be made by contacting Jacky Gorman at DEEP at (860) 434-8638 or jacky.gorman@ct.gov.

The deadline for submissions is October 21. The winner will be announced on October 27 at Mystic Seaport.
