Bayberry Insurance owner Pam Atkins celebrated her agency’s 20th anniversary by giving back to the community, and Hospice Southeastern Connecticut was one of the recipients. Bayberry clients were asked to vote for the community organizations most important to them. The three highest vote-getters each received donations of $1,000 from the insurance agency.

Hospice Southeastern Connecticut provides care at home and often skilled nursing facilities for people facing the end of life, regardless of age, disease or inability to pay. Bayberry client Maureen Plumleigh said, “My mom spent three years in our home, actively participating in our lives. When her back pain was diagnosed as spinal cancer, her needs eventually grew beyond our abilities and I called Hospice Southeastern Connecticut.

“The daily visits from aides, a nurse for my mother, and a social worker for me and my husband enabled us to continue to care for Mom in familiar surroundings so she could end her life peacefully. I will always be grateful for the support Hospice Southeastern Connecticut gave us.”

Carol Mahier, Hospice Southeastern Connecticut Executive Director, said, “This generous gift is particularly welcome during these tough economic times. Right now, we have to stretch our resources further than ever to meet community needs.”

“We believe it’s important to give back to our community,” Atkins said. “Like Hospice, we are rooted here, and everyone at the agency is a lifelong resident of the area. We are delighted to make this contribution as a meaningful way to celebrate our 20th anniversary of serving area residents’ insurance needs.”

Hospice Southeastern Connecticut also provides bereavement services for families in New London County free of charge, regardless of whether the death occurred under hospice care or not.
