Russian-born, Israeli-raised Jazz Vocal Phenomenon Sophie Milman in Connecticut Debut at the Garde's Oasis Room
(New London) Sultry Russian-born, Israeli-raised, Toronto-based jazz singer Sophie Milman will be making her New London debut at the intimate Oasis Room of the Garde Arts Center for An Evening With Sophie Milman on Friday, November 18, at 8 p.m. Preceded by a reception at 7 p.m. catered by Two Chefs, the concert is presented by the Jazz @ Garde Community Fund.
For her Garde debut, the charismatic Sophie Milman will be featuring her newest release, the lush, warm and romantic "In the Moonlight," her fourth album. Milman's most sophisticated and accomplished work to date draws upon her sublime interpretive skills and unique personal history to deliver a deeply compelling set of jazz and pop standards from Gershwin to Weill to Ellington that showcases the subtle emotional shadings of her singing.
Milman was quickly launched into international stardom after winning a Juno Award for Jazz Vocal Album of the Year for 2008’s "Make Someone Happy," which also took the #1 position on the iTunes jazz charts and cracked the top 5 on Billboard’s jazz chart. Named a critics’ choice by "The New York Times," which praised her for applying “a nostalgic gloss to everything she touches,” Sophie, still in her twenties, takes listeners on an emotional ride, with her captivating stage presence and husky alto described as a “classic jazz voice that evokes smoky lounges, softly clinking glasses and the cool of the night,” by NPR’s Weekend Edition.
Tickets to An Evening with Sophie Milman are $40, general admission. Seating is limited. The ticket includes a pre-show reception in the Garde mezzanine catered by Two Chefs.
