Trees: An Exhibit of Paintings By Mark Patnode
NAC presents Trees, an art exhibit of landscape paintings by artist Mark Patnode at the NAC Gallery. Creating a tangible sense of place in his paintings, Patnode often works on a large scale to further envelope himself in the act of creating, and conveying that experience to the viewer. "The light from the sky influences everything," Patnode says, "because it is not only above us but all around us. What is around objects puts color in them."
Patnode recently received recognition for his painting of the charter oak that was chosen by Governor Rell to be used for the logo of Connecticut's Tercentennial. He has been a Fellow of the Urban Artists Initiative and has exhibited his work internationally.

Every year during the lunar New Year, according to the marvelous documentary "Last Train Home," 130 million Chinese workers return to their villages from the industrial cities where, in the bustling new economy, they serve as factory workers. One such couple, Chen Suqin and her husband, Zhang Changhua, originally from the rural Sichuan Province, have been working in the factories of Guangzhou for 15 years.
Directed by the Chinese-Canadian Lixin Fan, "Last Train Home" follows this couple over a period of three years as they reconnect each year with their children, Zhang Qin, a high school girl, and her younger brother - both of whom have been cared for practically since birth by their grandmother.
The NCC presents a different film every second Saturday at 7:30 PM in the Donald L. Oat Theater. Also catch their foreign films every forth Friday at Norwich Free Academy. For futher details on upcoming NCC films, click

Great Backyard Bird Count with Leffingwell Inn
The 2011 GBBC will take place Friday, February 18, through Monday, February 21. Please join us!
The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts. It takes as little as 15 minutes on one day, or you can count for as long as you like each day of the event. It's free, fun, and easy-and it helps the birds.
Participants count birds anywhere for as little or as long as they wish during the four-day period. They tally the highest number of birds of each species seen together at any one time. To report their counts, they fill out an online checklist at the Great Backyard Bird Count website or they can mail it in.
As the count progresses, anyone with Internet access can explore what is being reported from their own towns or anywhere in the United States and Canada. They can also see how this year's numbers compare with those from previous years. Participants may also send in photographs of the birds they see. In 2010 Norwich was the most reported city in Connecticut!
