UNH Southeastern Campus Offers New Graduate Certificate in

Emergency Management

West Haven, Conn., February 1, 2011—The Southeastern Campus of the University of New Haven (UNH) will offer a graduate certificate in emergency management as a hybrid program for graduate students beginning in April. The Southeastern Campus is located in New London, Conn.

This four-course program provides professionals who are currently working in policing, fire protection, town management or facilities management with the skills necessary to prepare for and respond to a number of emergency situations. Emergency management students learn emergency management principles, social and natural science knowledge, administrative and managerial skills, and technical and personal competencies that are necessary to plan for and implement hazard mitigation and catastrophe responses.

Michelle Mason, director of the UNH Southeastern Campus, notes the program was designed to help students develop the problem-solving skills needed by communities in emergency situations, adding, “Emergency management students will learn how to step into leadership roles in the event of a disaster and help build community capacity in preparing for crises.”

The graduate certificate in emergency management is offered in a cohort format, with the same group of working professionals following a set schedule and progressing through the program together. Classes are offered in the evenings and are designed to meet the needs of working students, with registration only occurring once per program, books and materials delivered to the classroom, and books, registration and fees included in the cost of tuition.

The program will be offered on Tuesday evenings from 6: – 9 p.m. for seven weeks per course, including an online component. All classes will be held in New London on the Mitchell College campus. Applications are currently being accepted and enrollment is limited.
