SustiNet Day @ the Capitol A Huge Success

Connecticut at Epicenter of Health Care Reform

Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut officials said today that the size and energy of the crowds that turned out for SustiNet Day yesterday showed the depth and breadth of support for the SustiNet health care reform proposal (H.B. 6600).

“We are invigorated by the wave of excitement and momentum we witnessed throughout the day,” said Juan A. Figueroa, president of the foundation. “Parents brought their children. Elders from our communities came. Individuals from labor, business and health care groups took time out from their busy schedules,” he said.

“The timing of the event could not have been more opportune,” stated Figueroa. A vote is expected in the State House of Representatives as early as next week - at the same time that momentum for health care reform is building at the national level. “SustiNet can put us at an enormous competitive advantage by enacting a law that anticipates and capitalizes on national reform,” he said. “SustiNet could serve as a blueprint for national reform.”

The SustiNet proposal includes a key provision that establishes a SustiNet Health Partnership Board, charged with the responsibility of submitting recommendations for action to the legislature within 30-60 days of the passage of federal health care reform.

Hundreds of participants in a rally on the steps outside of the capitol concluded the day by marching silently through the halls of the capitol building. They wore red T-shirts with the words “SustiNet, Health Care We Can Count On” emblazoned on the back.
