In support of workers and staff furloughed or impacted by the federal government shutdown, the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT is compiling a list of discounts from local restaurants, hotels, and service providers in an attempt to help provide relief.

Connecticut Humane Society

The CHS will be distributing free food for cats, dogs and small critters across the state, and asking the public for assistance in boosting the available food supply. Federal workers in need of CHS’ Pet Food Pantry assistance are asked to fill out an online form on CHS’ website with their name and contact information, as well as the number of pets who need food and their breed and size. They will be asked to present their federal employee ID when picking up their food. Federal workers can pick up the pet food on Wednesday, Jan. 23, from 2-5 p.m. at CHS’ Newington location at 701 Russell Road, and at the Robin I. Kroogman New Haven Animal Shelter, 81 Fournier Street, New Haven. CHS distributed pet food and supplies to the Coast Guard Thursday, Jan. 17.

Groton Utilities will not charge late payment fees (1.5%) for any outstanding balance for as long as the shutdown continues to any federal employee who has been furloughed or are working without compensation. Customers will need to verify that they are federal employees and furloughed or working without pay by showing a pay stub or federal identification at Groton Utilities and Bozrah Light and Power during regular business hours

Yale New Haven Health is waiving copays, deductibles or coinsurance for any furloughed government employee who seeks emergency treatment in one of our emergency departments, urgent care or walk-in centers as long as they present their federal ID at the time of service

Mystic Aquarium will offer free weekday admission to all government employees affected by the federal shutdown beginning Monday and lasting through the duration of the shutdown.

Government employees must show a valid work identification. The offer is redeemable at the gate and is valid for government employees only.

Mystic Seaport Museum is offering free admission to all furloughed federal workers and one additional guest throughout the remainder of the partial federal government shutdown. In order to receive free admission, federal employees must bring a government identification card and present it at the admission desk upon entering the Museum.

Furloughed employees facing financial hardship due to the government shutdown will have their membership fee waived at the Ocean Community YMCA. This policy will remain in effect until the furloughed worker’s compensation is restored. The YMCA will also be offering free trials to furloughed employees during the shutdown if they are not currently members. Furloughed workers should bring their government I.D. and any furloughed documentation to the Welcome Center of the YMCA location they will be attending. Participating branches: Westerly-Pawcatuck, Naik Family, and Acadia.
